Wind Water for Life provides clean water to almost 30,000 people in Senegal.

In 2004, a Cholera outbreak in Senegal caused by contaminated drinking water highlighted the need for a clean water source. Access to clean water is a fundamental health and development issue.

VEV, an acronym meaning Wind Water for Life when translated to English, saw the opportunity to create a business centered on repairing old abandoned Italian wind water pumps. VEV now maintains wind powered water pumps for over 50 communities.

Impact:

  • Improved supply and quality of water to almost 30,000 people.
  • More spare time for women and children, who traditionally collect water.
  • Improved health conditions of the population due to the availability of clean water.
  • To date, over 140 million liters of clean water have been pumped.

In partnership with the United Nation’s African Rural Energy Enterprise Development program (AREED) and ENDA, a local Senegalese organization, we provided VEV with enterprise development support and US$22,395 for working capital and equipment purchases.
