15,172 households served with modern energy while reducing deforestation

For many low-income households in Ghana, traditional cooking fuel is firewood and charcoal. These traditional fuels are expensive, time consuming to collect and unhealthy due to the resulting poor air quality.

Anasset, a Ghana-based liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) company, provides an alternative fuel source to nearly 15,172 households.

Impact:

For former charcoal users (63% of current Anasset customers)

  • Time-savings in cooking and wood gathering.
  • Avoided carbon dioxide emissions in the indoor cooking environment.

For former kerosene and electricity users

  • Energy Cost-savings (estimated at $58,000 per year).
  • Reduction in noxious emissions in the kitchen.

In partnership with the United Nation’s African Rural Energy Enterprise Development Program (AREED), and a local African institution, we provided enterprise development services and investment to implement the first phase of the company’s growth plan. Anasset has doubled its LPG storage capacity and provides a reliable point of sales to its customers.

In 2005, Anasset opened a second filling station in Aflao, Ghana. This station will serve primarily rural areas of Ghana – areas that often suffer from the lowest electrification rate. Anasset’s two filling stations are experiencing great success and the company is set to open a third station in 2007. The number of employees has increased from 8 to 20.
